NEW PROJECTS
High Priority Weeds in the Northern Peninsula Area
This project is aimed at controlling and where possible eradicating four high priority weeds that occur in the Northern Peninsula Area. The weeds that are being targeted are Gamba Grass (Andropogon gayanus), Lion’s Tail (Leonitis nepetaefolia), Pond Apple (Annona glabra) and Lantana (Lantana Sp.).

A ground survey has been conducted of roads, tracks, woodlands and coastal areas using four wheel drive vehicles and quad bikes. The data collected during these surveys has been loaded into our GIS database, where accurate maps can be produced and used to plan the control work. These maps are also made available to the shire councils within the area.

On ground control work is also being undertaken where CYWAFAP staff are engaging and training council staff, Land and Sea rangers and CDEP workers in the use of GPS, plant recognition/ taking plant specimens, chemical handling, maintenance and care of equipment and control work. An awareness and education program is also being carried out.
