Wild River Ranger Coordination

What is wild river rangers

The Queensland Government has funded rangers in Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf of Carpentaria to protect and promote the work class natural values of Queensland's wild rivers. At present there is Wild river Rangers based at Kowanyama (Coleman River), Doomagee and Burketown (Settlement and Gregory Rivers), Chuulangun (Wenlock and Pascoe Rivers), Pormpuraaw Coleman and Holroyd Rivers), Normanton (Morning Inlet and Staaten River), and in development stage Girringun (Hinchinbrook), Northern Gulf (Eastern Staaten) and Northern Peninsula Area (Jacky Jacky and Jardine Rivers). The rangers ensure that the unique ecologies of wild rivers are better managed and preserved by manging weeds, feral animals, fire and other threats to the river systems.

The team at CYWAFAP have strengthened their partnership with the Wild River Rangers Program by taking on a project that involves  mentoring the the rangers groups listed above. The qualified staff at CYWAFAP will provide accredited training under the Conservation and Land Management training package, provide NRM technical support, community liaison and education. 


Through the program an assortment of equipment to carry out pest management activities was purchased. Existing and new Wild River Ranger groups can access the equipment though CYWAFAP on a schedule basis. The equipment will allow the ranger groups to maintain continuous on-ground natural resource management outcomes.
